Aperture & Bokeh Photography

Aperture & Bokeh Photography

Saturday 02 March
The Birmingham Botanical Gardens - 11am - 2 Hours
Martin Tierney
In photography, bokeh (which means "blur" or "haze") Japanese is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in out-of-focus parts of an image.

Best Aperture for Bokeh:

To achieve bokeh in an image, you need to use a fast lens 2014the faster the better. You'll want to use a lens with at least an f/2.8 aperture, with faster apertures of f/2, f/1.8, or f/1.4 being ideal.
Many photographers use fast prime lenses when shooting photographs that they want visible bokeh in.

To create visible bokeh in your photographs, increase the distance between your subject and the background. You can do this by decreasing the distance between the camera and the subject. The more shallow the depth-of-field, or further the background is, the more out-of-focus it will be.

The most photographed subjects showing excellent examples of bokeh are portraits.
Close-up portraits show bokeh very well. Also, close-up or macro images of flowers and other objects in nature are also popular subjects to photograph that show off bokeh well.

Join us to learn how to achieve this.

We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art.
